Let's talk about something that comes up in my DMs, my coaching sessions, and honestly just about every conversation I have with dental hygienists across the country.
"Tina, how do I actually get certified to give local anesthesia?"
Great question. And the answer is simpler than you might think — so let's break it down without the overwhelm.
First — Why Does This Even Matter?
Here's the exciting news that sometimes gets lost in the daily grind of dentistry: every single state in the U.S. now allows dental hygienists to administer local anesthesia.
Every. Single. One.
That's huge.
But wanting to give anesthesia and being certified to give anesthesia are two different things. In most states, you need to complete a board-approved certification course before you can legally pick up that syringe. And that's exactly where I come in.

So What IS Local Anesthesia Certification?
Think of it as your official permission slip. A local anesthesia certification course is a structured educational program that covers:
The science — pharmacology, anatomy, and how local anesthetics actually work in the body
The technique — how to safely and confidently administer injections
Patient management — health histories, contraindications, and how to handle the "nervous Nellies" in your chair
The clinical component — hands-on practice, because reading about giving injections and actually giving them are very different things
When you complete an approved course, you receive your certification which you then submit to your state dental board to obtain your permit. Then you're officially syringe-slingin' legally and confidently.
Who Needs It?
If you are a dental hygienist or dental assistant who wants to expand your scope of practice and add local anesthesia to your skillset — this is for you. Whether you are a brand new graduate or a seasoned clinician who never got around to getting certified, it is never too late.
And here's something I hear all the time from my students after they complete the course:
"I wish I had done this sooner."
What Should You Look For in a Certification Course?
Not all courses are created equal. Here's what to look for when choosing the right one for you:
✅ State Board Approval This is non-negotiable. Make sure the course is specifically approved by your state dental board. An amazing course that isn't approved by your state won't get you your permit — so always check this first.
✅ A Strong Clinical Component You cannot learn to give injections from a screen alone. Look for a course that includes hands-on clinical training with real patients or simulation. This is where your confidence is actually built.
✅ Flexible Learning Because let's be real — you are busy. A course that offers online self-paced study for the lecture portion, combined with an in-person clinical day, gives you the best of both worlds. Learn on your schedule, then come in and put it all into practice.
✅ A Supportive Instructor Anesthesia can feel intimidating — especially if you have never given an injection before. An instructor who creates a positive, encouraging environment makes all the difference in the world. Trust me on this one.
How Does Teacher Tina RDH Fit In?
I have been teaching local anesthesia certification for years and I absolutely love it. Watching a hygienist go from nervous and uncertain to confidently nailing their first injection is one of the greatest things I get to witness in my career.
My certification courses are:
State board approved for Hawaii, Oregon, and Georgia
Designed for the busy professional — online lecture you complete at your own pace, followed by an in-person clinical day
Small group settings — because individualized instruction matters
Built on real-world technique — not just what looks good on paper
Ready to Get Started?
Getting your local anesthesia certification does not have to be complicated or stressful. With the right course and the right instructor, it can actually be one of the most rewarding things you do for your career.
You've got the skills. You've got the drive. Now let's get you that certification.
