HOW TO GET YOUR LOCAL ANESTHESIA CERTIFICATION IN HAWAII

Aloha, Hawaii dental professionals! 🌺

This one is for YOU. If you have been wondering how to get your local anesthesia permit in the state of Hawaii — you are in exactly the right place. Let's talk about what it takes, what to expect, and how Teacher Tina RDH can help you get there.

Hawaii Hygienists CAN Give Local Anesthesia — Here's the Deal

Great news first — Hawaii dental hygienists are absolutely permitted to administer local anesthesia. But just like most states, you need to hold an active local anesthesia permit issued by the Hawaii Board of Dentistry before you can legally pick up that syringe chairside.

To get your permit you need to complete a board-approved local anesthesia certification course that covers both the educational and clinical components required by the state. Once you complete the course your certification documentation gets submitted to the Hawaii Board of Dentistry as part of your permit application.

That's where I come in. 😊

Wait — Which Course Do YOU Need?

Here's something unique about the Hawaii certification process that I want to make sure you understand before you enroll anywhere — because it matters.

Hawaii offers two pathways depending on where you are starting from:

🔵 Full Certification Course — 60 CEU

This is for you if:

  • You have never received your local anesthesia certification before, OR

  • You have only had infiltration injection training and have not been certified in block anesthesia

This course covers everything from the ground up — pharmacology, anatomy, patient assessment, injection techniques, complication management, and hands-on clinical practice. It is comprehensive, it is thorough, and it will have you walking out of that clinical day feeling like a completely different clinician.

🟢 GAP Certification Course

This is for you if:

  • You are already certified in block local anesthesia in another state, BUT

  • You do not yet meet the full educational requirements for Hawaii

Think of this as a bridge course. It fills in the gaps between what your previous certification covered and what Hawaii specifically requires. Note: If you were only certified in infiltration anesthesia in another state, you will need to enroll in the Full Certification Course.

Not sure which one is right for you? Reach out — I am happy to help you figure it out before you enroll. No guessing games here.

How the Course Works — Hybrid Learning That Fits Your Life

I built this course for the busy dental professional — because I know you are not sitting around waiting for something to fill your schedule. Here's how the hybrid format works:

Step 1 — Complete the Online Lecture Thirty hours of recorded lecture, reading, and assessments — all online and completely self-paced. Watch it on your lunch break. Watch it on the couch. Watch it at 6am with your coffee if that's your thing. No rigid schedule, no deadlines breathing down your neck.

Step 2 — Pass the Exam Before moving on to the hands-on portion you will need to pass the course examination with a 75% or higher. Don't stress — if you put in the work during the lecture portion you will be ready.

Step 3 — Attend the In-Person Practicum This is where the magic happens. The hands-on clinical day is where everything you learned online comes to life. You will demonstrate competency in both intraoral block anesthesia and soft tissue infiltration anesthesia in a supportive, small group setting with me right there beside you.

Step 4 — Receive Your Certification Complete the course, demonstrate your competency, and walk away with your certification documentation ready to submit to the Hawaii Board of Dentistry. 🎉

What the Full Course Covers

For those enrolling in the Full Certification Course here is a snapshot of what you will learn:

  • Pharmacology — anesthetic solutions, dosages, vasoconstrictors, and drug interactions

  • Neural physiology — how local anesthetics actually work in the body

  • Head and neck anatomy — because knowing your landmarks is everything

  • Medical history evaluation — how to properly assess your patient before you ever pick up a syringe

  • Contraindications and patient management — knowing when to proceed and when to pump the brakes

  • Injection techniques — block and infiltration, broken down in a way that actually makes sense

  • Complication management — identifying and managing adverse reactions like the confident clinician you are

A Note From Tina

I know that for some of you the idea of giving injections feels a little intimidating right now. Maybe you never gave one in school. Maybe it has been years since you touched a syringe. Maybe you are already certified somewhere else and just need to get up to speed for Hawaii.

Wherever you are starting from — I've got you.

This course is designed to meet you right where you are and walk you all the way to confident. And I promise you, that clinical day? The one where you land your first injection and your patient looks up at you and says they barely felt a thing?

That is a moment you will not forget. 🙌

Hawaii — I am SO excited to be bringing this certification to you. Let's do this. 🌺
